Adau dEvagRuhE nyasya kalashAn sapta paMcha vA
AharEt tulasIM dUrvAM puShpANyadyatanAni cha

ಆದೌ ದೇವಗೃಹೇ ನ್ಯಸ್ಯ ಕಲಶಾನ್ ಸಪ್ತ ಪಂಚ ವಾ
ಆಹರೇತ್ ತುಲಸೀಂ ದೂರ್ವಾಂ ಪುಷ್ಪಾಣ್ಯದ್ಯತನಾನಿ ಚ

In this Shloka:Sri Jayateertharu, gives us information on the materials required for the worship of Lord, and they are five or seven kalashaas, tulasi, Flower plucked on the same day.

To start the pooja, place seven or five kalasa in the pooja room. Get tulasi, grass (garike), and the flowers that are plucked on the same day.

The water that gets filled into the kalashaa should be pure, and clean. One should write Narashima beejaakshara with his fore finger while filling the water into the kalashaas.

Before you begin to get all the pooja materials, one should complete all their daily karmas (brushing the teeth, bathing, etc), have a clear and clean mind, wear clean cloth, and tulasi mala.  One should not talk, and with bhakthi, should start chanting (neither too fast or slow) the shlokas. Without reciting the shlokas one should not perform the pooja.

Method to collect the tulasi leaves:

– start with praying to tulasi devi:
ಪುಷ್ಕರಾದ್ಯಾನಿ ತೀರ್ಥನಿ ಗಂಗಾದ್ಯಾ: ಸರಿತಸ್ತಥಾ
ವಾಸುದೇವಾದ್ಯೋ ದೇವಾ ವಸಂತಿ ತುಲಸೀವನೇ
ರೋಪಿತಾ ತುಲಸೀ ಯಾವತ್ ಕುರುತೇ ಮೂಲವಿಸ್ತರಮ್
ತಾವದ್ವರ್ಷಸಹಾಸ್ರಾಣಿ ವಿಷ್ಣುಲೋಕೇ ಮಹೀಯತೇ
ಪ್ರಸೀದ ಮಮ ದೇವೇಶಿ ಪ್ರಸೀದ ಹರಿವಲ್ಲಭೇ
ಕ್ಷೀರೋದಮಥ್ನೋದ್ಬೂತೇ ತುಲಸಿ ತ್ವಂ ಪ್ರಸೀದ ಮೇ

puShkarAdyAni tIrthani gaMgAdYA: saritastathA
vAsudEvAdyO dEvA vasaMti tulasIvanE
rOpitA tulasI yAvat kurutE mUlavistaram
tAvadvarShasahAsrANi viShNulOkE mahIyatE
prasIda mama dEvEshi prasIda harivallabhE
kShIrOdamathnOdbUtE tulasi tvaM prasIda mE

–  chant tualsi harana mantra:
ತುಲಸ್ಯಮೃತಜನ್ಮಾಽಸಿ ಸದಾ ತ್ವಂ ಕೇಶವಪ್ರಿಯೇ
ಕೇಶವಾರ್ಥಂ ಚಿನೋಮಿ ತ್ವಾಂ ಕ್ಷಮಸ್ವ ಹರಿವಲ್ಲಭೇ

tulasyamRutajanmAsi sadA tvaM kEshavapriyE
kEshavArthaM chinOmi tvAM kShamasva harivallabhE

–  Make sure that you pluck tulasi leaves after taking bath.
–  Make sure that you do not pluck the leaves without using your nails
–  Take bath again after plucking tulasi leaves
–  One should not pluck tulasi on Sunday’s, Tuesday’s, Friday’s, Yugadi’s, Sankranthi’s, full moon day, new moon day, dvadashi, afternoon, evening,  during night, sandhya and parva kalas.  However, one can pluck tulasi on these days except on dvadashi only the required quantity for God’s pooja only.
–  One should not get tulasi on their bare hands, or on cloth, on paper.
–  One should not wash tulasi leaves.
